Comprehensive Asbestos Disposal and Abatement Project at DPW Site in Mattapoisett, MA

Banner Environmental Services recently completed an intricate asbestos disposal and abatement project at a Department of Public Works (DPW) site in Mattapoisett, MA. This project required meticulous attention to detail and strict adherence to safety protocols to ensure the thorough removal and proper disposal of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs). Our trained and licensed professionals dedicated themselves to providing top-notch asbestos abatement services.

Mattapoisett Town Barn and Garage Abatement

The asbestos removal project was conducted at the town barn and garage of the DPW site in Mattapoisett. This task was particularly demanding due to asbestos-contaminated soil and transite pipes requiring specialized safe handling and disposal techniques.

Asbestos Removal Preparation and Setup

A critical preparation component involved placing a 40-yard closed container outside the exclusion zone. This setup ensured that all potentially hazardous materials could be safely stored and transported off-site. Additionally, we prepared for the possible reduction of pipe sizes by constructing a pop-up containment zone, ensuring that any cutting or resizing occurred in a controlled environment.

Asbestos Pipe Handling and Disposal

The pipes, identified as containing ACM, were meticulously wrapped in two layers of six-mil poly. This added precaution was vital to prevent any asbestos fibers from becoming airborne. These wrapped pipes were then safely placed into the 40-yard disposal container.

Asbestos-Contaminated Soil Collection and Disposal

To address the asbestos-contaminated soil, we utilized Gaylord boxes, which were double-lined for added security. The soil, directed for removal by a third-party Industrial Hygienist (IH), was collected and stored in these boxes for safe transport. Approximately 360 square feet of contaminated soil was removed from a trench measuring around 90’x4′. The top 4 inches of sand from the trench were stockpiled for reuse, and an additional 2 inches of suspected contaminated soil was also removed and placed into the double-lined Gaylord boxes.

Final Steps and Quality Assurance

Upon removing the remaining 25 linear feet of ACM transite pipe, our team ensured that all waste materials were securely packaged and disposed of in compliance with federal and state regulations. Documentation and tracking of all activities were meticulously maintained to provide a clear record of compliance and environmental safety.
